Kumail Nanjiani Entered Therapy After Marvelously Bad ‘Eternals’ Reviews

This week, Kumail Nanjiani discussed the psychological toll that promoting a movie with unfavourable reviews may have. He disclosed that, in 2021, after the Eternals press tour concluded, he ended up visiting a psychotherapist.

Nanjiani discusses the psychological ramifications of negative film reviews.

“I was too aware of the bad reviews,” Nanjiani said when she and Michael Rosenbaum appeared on Inside of You. “I was checking too much and reading every review.”Eternals, a 2021 release directed by Chloe Zhao, is currently rated 47% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of Marvel’s lowest-ranked films in the cinematic universe.

“It was extremely difficult because Marvel anticipated the film would receive excellent reviews, so they decided to lift the embargo early and screen it at a few prestigious film festivals. They also sent us on a massive international promotional tour to coincide with the embargo’s lifting,” Nanjiani remarked.

Star of Eternals remembers how the promotional tour affected her emotionally

“It’s not all because of the movie’s actual quality, I think there was some weird soup in the atmosphere for why that movie got slammed so much,” he continued. It was really challenging, and that’s when I realised that this was no longer how I could approach my career and that it was unfair to Emily and me. Some s*** needed to alter, so I started counselling. I still talk to my therapist about that.

He said, “Emily says that I do have trauma from it.” “That was tough, wasn’t it? We actually just had dinner with someone else from that movie, and he said, ‘Yeah, that was really tough,’ and I think we all went through something similar,” he said. Before the film’s release, Nanjiani became well-known for his role in Eternals, which involved a dramatic physical transformation.

Marvel anticipated positive reviews, but got negative feedback instead.

“I decided I wanted to transform how I looked after learning a year ago that I was going to be in Marvel’s Eternals,” he wrote on Instagram at the time. “I could not have done this if the biggest studio in the world hadn’t paid for me to work with the top trainers and nutritionists for an entire year. Even while I like how I look, I can also understand why I never did before. It would not have been possible without these resources and time.

Nanjiani has been open about the fact that he still feels uncomfortable talking about his body ever since. The Oscar-nominated screenwriter starred in the highly criticised 2021 Marvel movie.

After receiving harsh criticism, Nanjiani sought medical attention.

During the Tuesday airing of “Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum,” comedian Rick Nanjiani recollected that this experience was “really, really hard” and that it continues to affect him. “Marvel chose to waive the embargo early and screen the picture at a select renowned film festivals since they expected the film to earn great reviews. The comic told Rosenbaum, “They also sent us on a massive international tour to promote the film at the same time that the embargo was lifted.”

The company, which is said to have obstructed the directors’ artistic vision in the past, selected Oscar winner Chloe Zhao to helm the film. Despite having a well-known brand and a strong cast, “Eternals” was criticised for its pompous scope and clumsy character motivations.

The plot of Eternals centres on Earth-dwelling aliens who come out of hiding to combat the Deviants, a threat to humanity. Nanjiani portrayed the noble person Kingo. “Druig (Barry Keoghan), a controller of minds, hides out in a jungle with a colony of labourers in his keep, and Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) — the MCU’s first deaf superhero and, in my opinion, the smartest Eternal of the lot — hides out in the supergroup’s spaceship to wait out the centuries until it’s time to go home,” according to Rolling Stone’s review, “while Kingo (Nanjiani) is off in Mumbai fashioning himself into a one-man dynasty of Bollywood icons.”
