Snow, Possibly A Blizzard Just Before Christmas
Think of Monday and Tuesday as the quiet period before the storm. As a result of the potential for a large winter weather system, Christmas travel is expected to be challenging and, at certain moments on Friday, almost impossible
From 6 p.m. on Thursday through 6 a.m. on Saturday, the Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, Will, LaSalle, Kankakee, Grundy, and DeKalb counties in Illinois and the Lake, Porter, Jasper, and Newton counties in Indiana are under a Winter Storm Watch.

The beginning of the week is normal for Chicago in late December. Both Tuesday and Wednesday will see largely cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 30s. Tuesday also has a risk of snow in the early morning.
The specifics of this winter storm’s forecast are gradually becoming clearer. Millions of people will be impacted beginning on Wednesday by a massive storm system, with the worst effects anticipated from Thursday through early Saturday

In reality, blizzard conditions are anticipated in areas of the Midwest and Great Lakes on Thursday and Friday, which will have a catastrophic effect on holiday travel. Chicago O’Hare International Airport may experience significant flight delays or a large number of cancellations as a result.
Then, through Christmas Day, it will get much colder and snowier.

A powerful storm is predicted to reach Chicagoland Thursday evening through Friday, bringing with it the potential for substantial snowfall, frigid temperatures, strong winds, and deadly wind chills.

It is still too early to predict how much snow may fall or which parts of Chicagoland will get the worst of the storm. Later on Thursday, snow will begin to fall, and it will continue overnight into Friday.
There could be blizzard conditions, which could have an impact on travel. High winds with gusts as high as 55 mph have the potential to cause power disruptions as well. By early Saturday, the snow will be gone, but the greatest danger then will be the intense cold.

According to the National Weather Service, snowfall and wind-driven snow can occasionally result in whiteout conditions with zero visibility, making driving exceedingly challenging, if not impossible.
Chicago Snowstorm Weather: Blizzard Conditions; What Are They?
A certain set of requirements must be satisfied before a weather pattern may be categorized as a blizzard. They consist of snow or blowing snow, wind gusts of at least 35 mph, and visibility of little more than a quarter of a mile.
To qualify as a blizzard, all three of above elements must be present for at least three hours.

The Chicago area experienced its snowiest Christmas on record in 1950, when the city received just over five inches of snow.

Chicago Snowstorm Weather: How Much Snow Might We Receive?
The exact storm route is still unknown, but models indicate that heavy snow will fall all day Thursday, with rising gusts and a drop in temperature later in the day.
It’s still too early in the week to provide precise snowfall estimates. However, Friday’s probable blizzard conditions could be brought on by heavy flurries combined with gusty, blowing snow and possibly lake-effect intensification.

Early predictions calling for 18"-20" of snow for Chicago metro area late Wednesday through Friday with blizzard conditions and bitter cold in its wake.
According to the National Weather Service, dangerous driving conditions are anticipated from Thursday through Saturday, with the worst conditions expected from Thursday evening through Friday evening. Models predict that bitter cold temperatures and strong, gusty winds will pose the greatest hazard, possibly causing power outages and catastrophic lakefront flooding, particularly for northwest Indiana.
The prediction models indicate that by the weekend, with temperatures expected to be below average, the Chicago area may have a severely cold Christmas in addition to a White Christmas, which by definition must include at least one inch of snow on the ground.
